Holiday and Training Courses.

More Information

Arrival:

If you wish to arrive early for your course during the preceding weekend, then please feel free to do so. Remember that you are a full club member from the day you pay your course balance so you can fly at any time before or after your course at normal Gliding Club rates. A club member will show you to your room if you have booked accommodation and will introduce you to your fellow course members for that week. Tents and caravans can be booked via the office and can be pitched near the static caravans.

Accommodation:

If you are staying in one of our bunk rooms, please bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and towels, as bedding etc. is not provided. There are toilets, showers and kitchen facilities available.

Food:

The local shops provide an excellent variety of food. Usually a “group” decision is made as to where lunch should be purchased. The club kitchen is available for use to make light meals and snacks. Drinks –making facilities are available in the club house paid for at normal club rates.

Gliding weather:

We fly on most days throughout the summer. The only days that we cannot fly are those days when either the wind is too strong (above 25 mph), fog, or constant heavy rain. Only a few days were lost over the last holiday period so the risk of losing flying time is minimal. Any lost flying time is not wasted however. Your instructor will take advantage of non flying time to give various briefings and lectures on your training to help you understand all the aspects of gliding.

Clothing:

Wear comfortable and loose fitting clothes but always remember that airfields can be exposed and cold,so bring some warm clothing just in case. Hopefully though, this season will bring warm weather so don’t forget your shorts. Sun-glasses and sun block are often essential, and don’t forget a light sun hat.

Photography:

There is no more photogenic sport than gliding. Feel free to bring your camera, 35mm compacts are best but if you bring an SLR make sure you have a neck strap for use in the glider as there is no place to store them in flight.

The Locality:

The airfield is situated only 10 minutes walk from the centre of the small and friendly market town of Pocklington. All local services are available here including a swimming pool, squash courts and gym. Burnby Hall water gardens are a must, especially in high summer as the water lily collection is the finest in Europe. Further afield is the Yorkshire Coast, the North York Moors and of course the historic City of York.

Under 18s:

The law requires special supervision of under 18s. Please ask for details.
